All'epoca si sapeva che le morti per AIDS solo negli Stati Uniti erano intorno a 15.000, con scarso riconoscimento da parte del governo, a parte il suggerimento di mettere in quarantena gli omosessuali su colonie insulari. Primo album della trilogia Masque of the Red Death, The Divine Punishment è una pietra miliare nell'arte e nell'attivismo di Diamanda Galás.
