Notes : Questo doppio LP presenta una delle ultime grandi band di Miles Davis:John Scofield alla chitarra, Bill "The Other Bill Evans" Evans ai sassofoni, flauto e piano elettrico, Darryl Jones al basso, Al Foster alla batteria e il percussionista Mino Cinelu.Miles era tornato in forma smagliante ("incandescente e iridescente come sempre", ha notato il critico Greg Tate), quando salì sul palco del Theatre St-Denis durante il Festival International De Jazz De Montreal nel luglio 1983, e questa performance rivelatrice è stata amorevolmente mixata e masterizzata per la sua prima pubblicazione in assoluto, su vinile per il Record Store Day 2022.
What It Is include brani dall'uscita di quell'anno Star People, il brano di Marcus Miller "Hopscotch" e la canzone "Jean-Pierre" che apparve su We Want Miles del 1982.
Le registrazioni di "What It Is" e "That's What Happened" furono così ben considerate da Miles che le utilizzò per la sua uscita del 1984 Decoy, ma in forma pesantemente modificata e questa uscita includerebbe la prima pubblicazione di esse in forma completa.
Confezionato in una bella confezione apribile, l'album presenta note di copertina scritte dall'incomparabile giornalista musicale Greg Tate e rappresentano alcuni dei suoi ultimi scritti.
